“The findings from the UK’s study suggest that men who use the popular erectile dysfunction medication Viagra may be at a higher risk of developing diabetes than those who do not use the medication.”
Researchers from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland found that men who used Viagra and sildenafil (the active ingredient in Viagra) more than doubled their risk of diabetes when compared to those who did not use the medication.
They also found that people who used Viagra were more likely to have hypertension, type 2 diabetes and a history of heart disease compared to those who did not use the medication.
“This suggests that the increased risk of diabetes and cardiovascular events in men who used Viagra is due to a reduced effectiveness of the drug,” the study authors said. “This is the first study to specifically look at this finding in a population with a high risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.”
Viagra, the brand name for sildenafil, was first developed in the late 1990s by Pfizer in the UK. It was marketed by Eli Lilly as a treatment for enlarged prostate.
The UK study was published online in the March 2024 issue of.
Professor Mark Morley, from the University of Edinburgh, said: “This study shows that a high prevalence of erectile dysfunction in men who used Viagra might have an increased risk of cardiovascular events and diabetes if the medication was not used for erectile dysfunction.
“We also found that men who used Viagra had a greater likelihood of having hypertension and type 2 diabetes compared to those who did not use Viagra.
“Our results suggest that men who use Viagra might have an increased risk of diabetes and cardiovascular events in men who have diabetes or high blood pressure and have a history of cardiovascular disease.”
Viagra and sildenafil are the same medication used to treat erectile dysfunction in women and men under the age of 50.
Professor Morley said: “Viagra is a drug that works by increasing blood flow to the penis. It can help men get and keep an erection when sexually stimulated.
“We found there was a very small but statistically significant increase in the risk of diabetes in those who used sildenafil. This suggests that the risk of diabetes in the general population might be increased in men who use sildenafil.”
The study was supported by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence.
Dr Laura Squire, director of the Royal College of Physicians’ Office of Sexual Medicine, said: “These findings are important as a warning to men who use Viagra and sildenafil to be careful about their sexual practices.“Our study supports a need for further research to understand the long-term effects of this medication on sexual health and well-being in men who use Viagra.”
Dr Janet Jackson, director of the Sexual Medicine and Health Education in England, said: “The findings from this study suggest that men who use Viagra and sildenafil may be at a higher risk of diabetes and cardiovascular events if the medication is not used for erectile dysfunction.
“The findings also raise awareness that the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular events in men who use Viagra might be increased in men who have diabetes or high blood pressure.

The U. S. Food and Drug Administration this month rejected an offer by Pfizer Inc. (NYSE: PFE) to sell about a third of its erectile dysfunction drugs on its websites.
The rejection, announced Thursday by Pfizer, could be seen as a significant move by regulators in the industry, which is investigating whether the U. drug companies are making health-conscious patients pay a hefty price for using their products.
Pfizer’s rejection comes as it is increasingly difficult for some pharmaceutical companies to prove their products are safe, and they face increased competition from generic versions of their drugs. However, the FDA is also seeing an opportunity to weigh in on the matter, given its concerns about the long-term health of patients who rely on erectile dysfunction drugs to treat their condition.
The agency is reviewing whether it can offer more than three-quarters of the drugs on its list, including Viagra, Cialis, Levitra and Stendra, as well as some of the older, more costly medications that may not be covered under the Medicare or Medicaid plans. The FDA is also reviewing whether it can approve a generic version of one of its drugs, Cialis, because of the risks associated with its use.
The FDA’s rejection comes amid fierce debate among doctors and patients about whether to prescribe these drugs under the Medicare Part D plan, and the potential impact of such a move on patients.
Pfizer is planning to introduce a generic version of its erectile dysfunction drugs, known as Cialis and Levitra, into the market in the second half of this year, though it has not specified when that will happen. The company has not yet issued a decision on whether or not to allow the generic versions of the erectile dysfunction drugs. The companies have been fighting to get the drugs to their markets.
A Pfizer spokeswoman said the company is reviewing whether to offer more than three-quarters of the drugs on its list.
“We believe that the appropriate amount of the drugs on this list will be sufficient to cover some of the costs associated with the treatment of erectile dysfunction,” said Kathleen Uhl, Pfizer’s chief executive officer. “We’re committed to protecting our patients and ensuring that our products are medically appropriate to their needs.
